About INAOE
The Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE) is one of Mexico's premier research centers, hosting state-of-the-art facilities in astrophysics, optics, and electronics. Founded in 1971, INAOE occupies the grounds of the historic Observatorio Astrofísico Nacional de Tonantzintla, established in the 1940s — one of the first modern observatories in Latin America.
The campus provides an inspiring, self-contained environment ideal for an intensive scientific workshop: lecture halls, computing facilities, on-site accommodation, and dining — all within walking distance of each other.
On-Campus Stay
INAOE provides on-campus accommodation and meeting facilities, keeping participation costs low. Participants are hosted in INAOE guest rooms offering comfortable basic amenities, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included throughout the workshop, including weekends.
Santa María Tonantzintla
INAOE is located in the small but charming village of Santa María Tonantzintla, a few kilometers from Cholula. The village centers on the extraordinary Church of Santa María Tonantzintla — a masterpiece of Mexican Baroque architecture, just 5 minutes' walk from INAOE, with an interior covered in vivid polychrome stucco and indigenous imagery.
During the workshop, all meals are provided on campus. Small shops and street food stalls are available nearby for snacks during free time.
San Pedro & San Andrés Cholula
Cholula is 10–15 minutes from INAOE by bus and offers supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, and a lively nightlife.
- Great Pyramid of Cholula — the largest pyramid by volume in the world, topped by a colonial church, with stunning views of the volcanoes.
- Zócalo (main square) with cafés, restaurants, and shops.
- Vibrant bar and restaurant scene in San Andrés.
- Supermarkets and pharmacies within walking distance of the Zócalo.
